There are some reports that not all women can properly absorb folic acid, due to a common genetic variant known as MTHFR polymorphism. A polymorphism is a variation in a gene, which doesn’t necessarily affect how that gene works.
The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners guidance is clear that regardless of a woman’s MTHFR status, a supplement containing clinically proven folic acid is recommended for all planning and pregnant women.13 Some high-risk groups of women (e.g. women diagnosed with epilepsy) may have additional supplementation requirements, and this should be managed by their doctor.
